2015 Joint-Base Andrews Motorcycle Safety Day

In its fifth year, the Joint Base Andrews Motorcycle Safety Day has become one of the National Capital Areas primary motorcycle safety day events open to all branches of the armed forces and those with base access.

The day started with a bike blessing and a police escorted off-base group ride followed by an afternoon of activities and demonstrations provided to not only entertain, but designed to teach attendees the importance of motorcycle safety and proper riding techniques.

Demonstrations included Moore Mini Motorard Racing, who’s team of riders brisk fully whipped around their course knee-dragging during a friendly game of follow-the-leader. “Mini Motorad is a great family activity and creates a bridge for all ages to enjoy” says Will “WillPower” Moore, Founder of Moore Mini Motoard Racing. To demonstrate throttle-control and braking was professional motorcycle drag racer Domonic Anderson who found himself in a bike-to-bike challenge by Prince Georges Motor Unit Officer Benjamin, aka Racer X. Leveling the playing field, Domonic mounted a 2016 BMW S 1000 RR courtesy of Bob’s BMW to go against Officer Benjamin’s fully geared Harley-Davidson Electra Glide. Racer X did his thing, but in the end proved to be no match for Dom and the stealthy S 1000 RR.

The skills competition pitted all riders against one another for the best time as they navigated a course consisting of figure 8s, hard rights, hard lefts, a standing stop followed by more twists and turns. Fairfax, VA and Prince Georges, MD Motor Units competed in an advanced skills competition with Fairfax County riding away with the winning trophy. It was then onto the always-fun “slow ride” competition. After a few rounds of elimination, the final ride brought Prince Georges and Fairfax together again for one last competition with Racer X back on deck representing. After a playful attempt to disrupt Fairfax by Prince Georges, Fairfax slow-rolled their way onto another victory.

Complimenting the various demonstrations and competitions were a host of sponsors and vendors. Harley-Davidson of Fort Washington had a complete set-up equipped with a demo bike. Victory of Southern MD rolled in with several bikes on display, and Clinton Cycles with DMV Baggers posted up with one of their customs. The American Motorcycle Association, The Megan Daymude-Fueling Her Dream Memorial Foundation, Bob’s BMW and the USO also represented on-site.

It’s the goal of the Joint Base Andrews Motorcycle Safety Day team to make the event even bigger and better in an effort to continue increasing the awareness and importance of motorcycle safety and we for sure will be there to support, maybe even join the competitions.
